Taylor Momsen Likes It Loud and Rough

Posted in : Gossips

(added 7 days ago)

Taylor Momsen Likes It Loud and RoughOne minute she was Cindy Lou Who in Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The next thing you know, 18-year-old Taylor Momsen was fronting a hard-rock band called The Pretty Reckless. The group's debut album, Light Me Up (2010), did some nice business, and definitely launched the young star as a fantastically unapologetic songwriter. For the past two years, Momsen has toured nonstop in promotion of the record, but still found enough time to release the EP Hit Me Like a Man earlier this year.

Hit Me Like a Man is three new songs of startling, sexual depth that will leave you gasping and bleeding. Whether or not it's an ode to exploration or a cry for salvation, we couldn't say. But we did ask Momsen.

Chatter: First off, why throw two live versions on the EP? Is there something specific about the way you play "Make Me Wanna Die" and "Since You're Gone" now that you feel better represents the song's intentions, or do you just like hearing the audience sing along?

Taylor Momsen: Personally, I'd like to release every song live. I love the way they sound, and I love live records in general. Mostly on this EP we wanted to give people a taste of what exactly we've been doing for the last two years on the road.

C: Is "Hit Me Like a Man" a consensual song? It's hard to tell where the line between abuse and S&M is.

TM: Well, I think I'll let the listener interpret it however they want. The line is, "Hit me like a man, and love me like a woman," so I think that there's this balance of pain and pleasure. You can take that to whatever extent that you want to.

C: Especially because you follow it up with "Under the Water," which is a really disturbing song. You sing about waking up in chains, and it basically sounds like you're dreaming about suicide and lament having to wake up back in an abusive situation.

TM: You're the first person to say that. First to mention the song at all, actually...I don't really talk about the inspirations behind my songs, or how they apply to me. They're very personal, and I don't feel like I owe anybody an explanation.

After all, when I grew up listening to Page and Plant, I didn't really care what the songs meant to them. All I cared about was how they made me feel.

C: There's a real interesting juxtaposition between the bright adulation you get on the live tracks and the complete hopelessness of the studio songs. Is this autobiographical, meaning are you trying to show both sides of yourself: The rock star and the real girl?

TM: We really didn't think of it that way. We had three new songs and wanted to get them out. We wanted to give fans something that wasn't just a cover song thrown together on the road. I write very honest songs, and by still doing that on tour, it keeps it exciting for us.

C: You talk about loving live albums and DVDs. Do you have a favorite?

TM: Oh, man, picking a favorite. I watch so many. I like anything with Zeppelin or Soundgarden, but my favorite is probably AC/DC: Live at Donington. I love the cuts back and forth from the band performing and just hanging out on the bus.

C: Even though you love doing things live so much, you're a really dedicated and prolific music-video artist. Do you get as much out of that experience?

TM: Yes, definitely. It's just the other side of the song, isn't it? I love making music videos. I've written the treatments for all five of mine.

C: Really?

TM: Yep. I even got a directing credit on "My Medicine." In general, I don't like to have too solid a story or characters in the videos. I want to be able to keep the interpretations open, while sticking with the vibes and undertones of the song. "My Medicine" is probably the least like that, though. It's a party, you know? It is what it is.

C: Are you looking forward to touring with Manson? Are you a fan of his?

TM: Hell yes! Golden Age of Grotesque is a phenomenal album. I got to duet with him on "Dope Show" at the Golden Gods [awards show]. It's going to be a great month on the road with him, then right back into the studio for the new album.

'Gossip Girl' Alum Connor Paolo on His Affection for Taylor Momsen, Potentially Returning to the CW

Posted in : Gossips

(added 9 days ago)

Gossip Girl' Alum Connor Paolo on His Affection for Taylor Momsen, Potentially Returning to the CWLittle J and Eric van der Woodsen’s on-screen relationship pales in comparison to the real-life friendship between former Gossip Girl stars Taylor Momsen and Connor Paolo. While both went on to pursue new endeavors after leaving the CW – for Momsen, a worldwide tour with her rock band The Pretty Reckless, and for Paolo, a job on ABC’s freshman drama Revenge – the duo remain close-knit pals. During an October performance at the Palladium in Los Angeles, Paolo could be heard cheering loudly from the V.I.P. section as Momsen hit the stage with her band.

“She’s been one of my really close friends for years now,” Paolo told The Hollywood Reporter of their mutual affinity, which began on the Gossip Girl pilot when he was just 16-years-old. “It’s been a relatively long friendship as far as my life goes, and honestly, I think I’d go to her shows if I didn’t know who she was. I love her band,” he added. “She is a friend of mine who I think is capable and does create fantastic art, so it's a joy for me to watch her -- and I love the character that she’s created on stage. Her stage persona is brilliant. “

While Momsen has received positive reviews for her moving vocals on the songs “Make Me Wanna Die,” “Just Tonight” and “My Medicine,” Paolo hopes to see her return to the acting game someday.
“I’m always yelling at Taylor to act because I think she’s great and I’d love to do something with her,” he said. “If I ever end up in [a director’s chair] for real, I’ll be vocal. I’ll make her do something for real because I hate wasted talent. “If I’m ever in a position to cast anything or to put anything together, she’s always at the top of my list,” he continued. “I think she’s great.”

As far as Gossip Girl is concerned, Paolo and Momsen’s characters are certainly alive and well – albeit far from any current storylines. Could the duo ever return to the series?

Speaking only for himself, Paolo admitted that he no longer watches the program, but would be open to the possibility if ABC and the CW could come to an agreement. “It’s quite impossible for me to do it being on the West Coast and doing Revenge, even just down to legalities,” he explained. “You’re contracted to one network, it’s not easy to show up on another network. So it was never about me not wanting to be there and more abut me not being able to be there.”

Don’t count Eric van der Woodsen out just yet, though. “[It’s] much more dependent on the writers of Gossip Girl calling me and going, ‘We’ve gotta get you back, man.’ Then it’s a discussion,” Paolo admitted. “But am I calling them incessantly and going, ‘I need to be back on for this finale’? No.”Gossip Girl, currently wrapping up its fifth season, airs Monday at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Viewers can see Paolo in his current role as Declan Porter on Revenge, airing Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The soapy ABC series seems a shoe-in for a season two pickup, though the network has yet to announce any renewals.

The Pretty Disheartening: Taylor Momsen’s band at Paradise Rock Club

Posted in : Gossips

(added 10 days ago)

I have never been so happy to be out of middle school as I was when I exited the Paradise on Thursday night after Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless show. It was (naturally) an all-ages show, so come 11:00, angsty tweens and gangly Skrillex look-alikes poured out of the venue looking as though they had they had just seen a completely different band than I had, grins plastered across their faces as they dialed their mothers to come pick them up.

The Pretty Disheartening Taylor Momsen’s band at Paradise Rock Club

Taylor Momsen (previously of Gossip Girl and Grinch fame) formed The Pretty Reckless in 2009, gathered a handful of generic rock men to back her on guitar, bass and drums, and released the band’s debut album, Light Me Up. The album’s sound relies heavily upon world-weary power chords paired with predictable melodies:  a perfectly marketable sound for that niche demographic of Warped Tour-goers and teenagers who maintain that no one, like, gets them. In fact, the only redeemable facet of the album (and thus far, the band’s entire sound) is Momsen’s voice, a soulful rasp that packs both precision and power into a single note.

This same voice is what saved the live show from absolute disaster as well. If anything, Momsen sounded better live than recorded, cracks in her howl only serving to add to the show’s overall aesthetic. Her bandmates’ skills were markedly less overwhelming: drummer Jamie Perkins seemed to fall a bit off-beat every few minutes, while guitarist Ben Phillips and bassist Mark Damon rendered some of the most, hell let’s just say it, boring melodies and solos I’ve seen all year. As Momsen herself puts it in the band’s hit single, it made me want to die.

This completely underwhelming craftsmanship on the part of Momsen’s backing band as well as cringe-worthy lyrical clichés made Momsen’s vocal achievements almost disappointing, simply because her talents were going to waste on such undeserving material. Perhaps she just needs some time to grow into herself and out of her teenage angst phase: we’ve all been there, and for the most part, we all grew out of it. Here’s hoping that Momsen does, although I, for one, am not holding my breath.

Taylor Momsen's 'Culture Room' Cigarette Break

Posted in : Gossips

(added 21 days ago)

Continuing on with her 35 city tour, Taylor Momsen was spotted outside the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The rocker chic 18-year-old took a few moments to smoke a cigarette and kick her feet up on the Pretty Reckless tour bus before heading in for her sound check.

Taylor Momsen's 'Culture Room' Cigarette Break

As previously reported by GossipCenter, Momsen is on tour with her band and The Hollywood Kills since early March and is scheduled to go on a month long tour with Marilyn Manson when his current plans are wrapped up. Aside from the busy touring schedule, the former "Gossip Girl" actress will also continue working on her second album upon her return.

In a recent interview, the blonde rocker goes in-depth about song writing, saying, "It's weird once it's done. When the song is written, it's constantly evolving. It's not working then it works. There's no in between. It's either great or it's not. We have a very high standard of things, which makes it difficult. Hopefully it'll pay off in the end."

Taylor Momsen sits on her tourbus puffing away on a cigarette

Posted in : Gossips

(added 22 days ago)

With a past in anodyne world of teen soap drama, it's unsurprising that Taylor Momsen is trying hard to convince as a rock star. She walks the walk, and looks at the part but it's possible that the 18-year-old is starting to take it all a bit too far. Firstly, there was that near X-rated performance with Marilyn Manson at LA's Golden Gods Awards last week.

Taylor Momsen sits on her tourbus puffing away on a cigarette

And it seems that the youngster is frequently spotted smoking, as she was today while her band, The Pretty Reckless, set up a sound check in Florida today. Dressed all in black at Fort Lauderdale's Culture Room, the blonde could be seen enjoying the cigarette on her tour bus. It's not a great habit for anyone to have, and especially not if she's adopted it to appear cooler, and er, reckless.

And it does seem as if that's a factor for the youngster, going by the recent video for their worryingly entitled song, My Medicine. The promo for the video features topless waitresses, a woman's bare backside, drug paraphernalia and smoking. Although Momsen keeps her top on - she does writhe around on the floor in a skimpy vest apparently under the influence of something as she sings about 'someone mixed my medicine.'

The video sees Momsen on the hunt for a party and is welcomed to the wild bash by a topless waitress.
When she walks in, she is surrounded by people in tiny outfits and covered in tattoos, appearing to be under the influence of drugs. And then there was that Manson performance, an act that was so near-the-knuckle that nobody noticed Johnny Depp was playing guitar.

The shock rocker and ex-Gossip Girl actress put on a very risqué performance as Manson pulled her head towards his crotch as they put on a sexually-charged set. The Pretty Reckless frontwoman was in a typically risqué ensemble of leather skirt with flesh-baring side panels and a matching bra as she writhed around on stage with the rocker. Joining Manson for a rendition of his 1998 song The Dope Show, the teen star danced with her head just inches away from his crotch. At one point, Manson pointed at Momsen's head with his hand in a shooting motion.

Taylor Momsen's 'Reckless' Night Out

Posted in : Gossips, Videos

(added a month ago!)

Leaving one of her latest "The Pretty Reckless" performances, Taylor Momsen was spotted exiting The Loft in Poughkeepsie, NY. Signing autographs for fans and smoking a cigarette, the former "Gossip Girl" actress sported her usual rocker style while wearing a long lace cami with a plaid shirt over-top, along with thigh high lace stockings and platform black boots.

Taylor Momsen's 'Reckless' Night Out

In a recent interview with SoundSpike, Miss Momsen dished about opening up for Marilyn Manson after her tour is finished, saying she's "really excited. I've been a fan of his forever. We were just in Australia doing Soundwave Festival. Unfortunately, we were playing the exact same time as Manson every day. We never got to meet Manson, but we met the rest of the band. They're all really great guys. It should be a really fun tour. We're really excited."

The actress/singer also says her and her band will be back in the studio as soon as they are done with their month long Manson tour, to continue work on their second album. The 18 year-old has been on The Medicine Tour with "The Hollywood Kills" since early March and will finish off the last stop in Boston on May 3. If you can't get enough of Taylor, check out the video below from her recent stop at VH1's "Big Morning Buzz".

The Pretty Reckless showcase Momsen

Posted in : Gossips

(added a month ago!)

The Pretty Reckless showcase MomsenIn support of their new EP, Hit Me Like a Man, the Pretty Reckless have set out on their Medicine Tour playing covers ranging from the White Stripes to System of a Down, new material, and some old.

Leading the Pretty Reckless clad in a leather jacket and fish net stockings with her dark makeup, Taylor Momsen’s extraordinary voice is more unique and trained than most of the leading ladies in music. Now if you think Lady Gaga is comfortable with her sexuality you should see Momsen live.

She’s a showgirl like Madonna and Gaga. When going into their biggest hit, “Make Me Wanna Die,” she runs around the stage and dances around like a stripper as she caresses her body sensually. Momsen has come a long way from her days as Cindy Lou Who to say the least.

The new material, including “Hit Me Like a Man,” works well with their old songs. The new EP boasts smarter lyrics on Momsen’s part and more of a blues hard rock sound from guitarist Ben Phillips.

“Zombie” is one of their songs that really comes alive when played in front of an audience, the performance part being a necessity. Their covers of the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” doesn’t really go swimmingly with the band’s image or sound. It’s really hard to hear anyone other than Jack and Meg White play that song with their aesthetically childlike red and white candy theme.

The show is all about Momsen and not so much about her fellow band members who are twice her age. Her rock star, dark princess persona has been much debated among fashion gurus and the acting world. She completely changes her chilled out demeanor to a raging, sexually charged up girl when she’s up on stage.

People focus too much on how Momsen dresses and forget that she’s actually really talented. Not only can she write her own music, she sings without any pitch problems, and she plays guitar.

Those who doubt her talent beyond acting need to see the Pretty Reckless live. They’re exactly what their name is — wild, beautiful, and out of control.
